Covellite is a copper sulfide with a crystal structure that forms beautiful indigo-blue purple iridescent thin, tabular, hexagonal plates and layered masses. Covellite often occurs with other copper minerals such as chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite. Some of the specimens are thin enough to be flexible.

 

Covellite’s hardness is rated at 1.5 to 2 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. When heated, Covellite fuses easily and produces a blue colored flame. Covellite is named after the Italian mineralogist Nicolas Covelli, who first described the mineral collected from Mount Vesuvius, Italy in 1832. Covellite is also known as Covelline. Covellite is opaque with a submetallic to resinous luster. Covellite is found in Germany, Italy, Wales, Serbia, Peru, Australia, Sardinia, and the USA.
