It forms in the oxidized zone of zinc ore deposits, often as beautiful, radiating blue or green botryoidal (grape-like) masses, or occasionally as sparkling colorless to white crystals. It can sometimes be confused with smithsonite, but its unique crystalline structure distinguishes it. Hemimorphite has a moderate hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale. Major sources include Mexico, Congo, Australia, China, and the United States.
