Some specimens form glowing drusy coatings while others develop thick rounded formations that resemble tiny golden spheres packed tightly together. Major sources include Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Australia, and parts of the United States, where it forms in the oxidized zones of lead rich ore deposits alongside minerals such as wulfenite, vanadinite, and pyromorphite. High quality specimens with vivid color and sharp crystal structure are especially prized among mineral collectors because of both their beauty and rarity.

Mineralogically, Mimetite is a lead arsenate chloride mineral belonging to the apatite group and has a Mohs hardness of around 3.5 to 4, making it relatively soft and somewhat fragile. Raw specimens should never be ingested, placed in water for elixirs, cut, crushed, or inhaled in dust form. Hands should always be washed after handling, and specimens should be kept away from children and pets. While stable display specimens are commonly collected safely when left intact, its toxicity is important to respect due to the presence of heavy metals and arsenic compounds within the mineral structure.
