Ashtoreth, also known as Astarte, was a prominent ancient Near Eastern goddess, particularly associated with fertility, love, sexuality, military prowess and war.
Ashtoreth was a major goddess in Canaan, where she was a principal deity alongside Baal. She was also worshipped in Phoenicia (Tyre and Sidon) and among the Hittites.
Her worship spread to Egypt and other regions, and she was sometimes identified with or equated to other goddesses like Ishtar (in Mesopotamia), Astarte (Greek), and Aphrodite (Roman).
Her symbols included the lion, the horse, and the moon.
