Zebra Agate, which is a trade name for a specific type of sedimentary rock, is very different from many varieties marketed as "zebra jasper"

based on their geological composition and properties.

 

Geologically, genuine Agate is a form of translucent, banded chalcedony, typically forming in volcanic cavities. However, the material commonly sold as "Zebra Agate" or "Zebra Stone" is actually a fine-grained sedimentary rock called siltstone or claystone, composed of fine quartz particles, sericite (mica), and iron oxides (hematite). The characteristic black and white (or brown/red and white) stripes or patterns are thought to have formed around 600 million years ago from the rhythmic precipitation of iron oxide as fluids moved through the sediment before it compacted into rock. This material is opaque, unlike translucent agate, and found almost exclusively in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, with major original deposits now lying under Lake Argyle.

Metaphysically, Zebra Agate is a powerful balancing and protective stone.
