Zincite is a remarkable mineral known for its vibrant colors and intense, high-frequency energy. Geologically, it is the natural mineral form of zinc oxide (ZnO), usually containing minor amounts of manganese and iron which give it its characteristic deep red, orange, or yellow hues. While synthetic forms of zincite are common as a by-product of zinc smelting processes in places like Poland, naturally occurring crystals are extremely rare, with the most notable source being the Franklin and Sterling Hill mines in New Jersey, USA, where it is found associated with willemite and franklinite. The natural form typically occurs in massive or granular aggregates rather than distinct crystals, making well-formed specimens a collector's prize. It is a soft mineral, rating around 4 on the Mohs scale, and possesses an unusually high luster (sub-adamantine to resinous) and specific gravity.
